Saudi Arabia: car market rose 11% in first half 2013. Geely in top 10!

In first half 2013, the light passenger vehicles market kept its impressive pace in Saudi Arabia, with 398.367 vehicles sold, over 40.000 more than same period year ago, in percentage a double digit increase at 11%.

The market was pushed up by strong GDP increase and growing demand for first car purchase from workers arrived from south Asia and employed in construction of the “New Saudi”, with building and financial sectors driving all the new economy.

Automotive sector has been defined as a key opportunity for the next decade development and government agencies are working hard to promote the opportunities to start vehicles local production and talks are in place with top carmakers, as focus2move reported in August.

The main issue is represented, now as in the past, by the political instability of the region and current crisis in Syria will postpone any plan in any direction.

Looking at the top brands performance during the first part of 2013, with focus on June:

Toyota dominated with 30.427 vehicles sold and a share of 41.9%. Year-to-date sales were 196.206 with a share of 41.6%, a very good performance, stable from the last quarter of 2012.

Hyundai confirmed the second place, selling in June 12.540 vehicles with a share of 17.3%, down 0.2 points from the Q2. Year-to-date sales were 83.495 with a share of 17.7%, a positive share from the last quarter of 2012 thanks to the outstanding performance of the first quarter of 2013.

Chevrolet in 3rd posted a strong June selling 4.250 units with a share of 5.9%. Year-to-date sales Chevrolet was 5th with 24.766 sales and a share of 5.2%, collapsed from the Q4 having lost 2.5 points of share, mainly due to the negative perofrmance in second quarter.

Kia was 4th selling 3.850 units with a share of 5.3%. Year-to-date sales were 25.500 with a share of 5.4%, up 0.2 points from the Q4 share also if this year had lower share than last one.

Ford was 5th (3rd year-to-date) selling 3.785 units with a share of 5.2%, down 0.7 points from the previous month. Year-to-date sales were 28.831 with a share of 6.1%, down 0.6 points from the last quarter of 2014, due to a declining year.

Isuzu was 6th selling 3.560 vehicles with a share of 4.9%. Year-to-date sales were 23.010 with a share of 4.9%, up 1.1 points from the Q4 thanks to the positive performances of both the quarter of 2013.

GMC was 7th selling 2.205 vehicles with a share of 3.0%. Year-to-date sales were 13.766 with a share of 2.9%, few points down the last year.

Honda was 8th (9th year-to-date) selling 1.480 vehicles with a share of 2.0%.Year-to-date sales were 9.600 with a share of 2.0%, up 0.2 points from the Q4.
