Slovakia auto market in 2020 falls by 25% as the pandemic and lockdowns affect sales. Full-Year sales have been 76.311, while Toyota is the only brand in the leaderboard to report growth by rising 3.5%.

Market Trend

The Slovakian car market has been hit in 2020 by the world-wide COVID-19 pandemic, which has impacted sales significantly.

The Slovakian car in recent years has been one of the most dynamic in Europe, as the country becomes a manufacturing hub for the entire continent, with the highest ratio of produced vehicles per person in the continent. The domestic new vehicle sales scored an impressive series of all-time records, starting from 2014.

Indeed, in the 2014-2018 period, the market grew up without break while the speed declined year after year, ending with a 2018 record of 98.079 sales, up a mere 2.1% from the previous year. In 2019 the market has marginally improved, signing the 6th consecutive year of growth. Indeed, the Full-year ended with registrations at 101.702, up 3.7% from the previous year.

After starting the year with a slight negative trend (-6.9%), the market quickly collapsed in March as the virus struck. The sharpest drop in sales this year was in April when sales declined by 61.5%.

The market remained down in double-digits until September (+31%), the only positive month of the year. Immediately after the market fell again 29.1% in October, and remained down until the end of the year, but recovered slowly ending in December down 8.2%.

Indeed, Full-Year sales for 2020 have been 76.311, reporting a decline of 25% compared to 2019.

Brand-wise, this year the leader Skoda (-15.6%) gained 2.4% market share, followed by Hyundai (-23.7%), which gained 0.1% share. Kia -up 1 spot- gained 0.1% share, falling 24%.  Volkswagen fell to 4th place (-30.1%), followed by Toyota -up 2 spots- which was the only brand to report growth, gaining 3.5% sales.

Peugeot -down 1 spot- lost 21.9%, followed by Renault -up 3 spots- which lost 6.6%, and Dacia which fell 2 spots and lost 38.1% sales. Closing the leaderboard we have Citroen losing 28.1% and Opel -down 2 spots-, losing 50.3% and reporting the worst performance on the leaderboard.

The most sold vehicle this year has been the Skoda Fabia (-29.7%) with 3.825 units sold, followed by the Skoda Octavia, which lost 34.3% registering 3.382 new sales this year. The Kia Cee’d (-47.6%) closes the podium and reports 2.024 new units sold.
