South Africa 2012. The market advances as World’s 23rd

December sales were 44.173, down 1.6% from last year, breaking the positive row after 19th consecutive year-on-year increase. Full Year 2012 sales were 600.000, up 9.0% from 2011, the best year in sixth years and third best ever year. The market reached the record volume in the 2006 at 681.000 units.

Looking at the best brands performance:

Toyota ended the year stable on top of the list, selling 8.691 vehicles with a share of 19.7%, down 1.6 points of share from the previous month, but enough to allow a full year share above 20%. Full 2012 sales were 118.261 with a share of 20.3%. Toyota in December posted 6 models in the Top 11, with Hilux in 2nd .

Volkswagen in second place sold 6.583 units with a share of 14.9%, up 0.2 points of share from the previous month. Full Year sales were 90.805 with a share of 15.6%. The Polo was the market leader, stable above 10% of share.

Ford soared in 3rd, up 2 spots, selling 3.881 units with 8.8% of share, up 1.0 points from the previous month and 2.1 from Q3. Full Year it was 5th with 39.972 sales and a share of 6.9%. Ranger in 4th and Figo in 5th are the secret of emerging share.

Chevrolet was 4th, selling 3.657 units with a share of 8.3%, down 0.3 points from the previous month. Full Year sales were 48.580 with a share of 8.3%. The best-selling model was Chevrolet Utility, 6th last month and 3rd in full year.

Nissan was 4th selling 3.211 vehicles with a share of 7.3%, down 1.7 points of share from the previous month and 1.3 points from Q3. Full Year it was 3rd with 52.001 sales and a share of 8.9%. The top mode, the NP200, dropped this month in 10th place while it was 4th in full year.

Mercedes rushed to win the yearly competition among luxury brands, posting 1.732 sales and a share of 3.9%. In Full Year it was 6th and 1st among luxury, with 25.696 sales and a share of 4.9%.

Audi was 7th, selling 1.191 units with a share of 2.7%, down 0.3 points from the previous month. Full Year it was 8th with 16.805 sales and 2.9% of share. The top model was the A4, 24th last month and 29th in full year.

Honda was 8th with 1.057 sales and 2.4% of share, up 0.9 points from the previous. Full Year it was 11th with 9.094 units and 1.6% of share.

Isuzu was 9th, with 1.006 sales and a share of 2.3%, down 0.1 points from the previous month. Full Year it was 9th with 13.392 units and 2.3% of share.

Land Rover was 10th with 888 units and 2.0% of share, the best share worldwide, outside of UK. Full Year it was 12th with 7.464 units and a share of 1.3%.

Looking at top models, December 2012 wasn’t a particularly busy month for new car launches in South Africa. However, entry-level car buyers will welcome the arrival of the budget friendly Hyundai i20 Motion and the Honda Brio to South Africa. Mercedes-Benz also introduced the exciting CLS Shooting Brake.

Volkswagen Polo (including Vivo derivatives) was stable in first place, selling 4.454 units for a share of 10.1%. Full Year sales were 63.539 with a share of 10.9%.

The Toyota Hilux in 2nd position posted 2.709 units with 6.1% of share. In full year sales were 34.396.

In third place, Toyota Etios sold 1.721 units with 3.9% of share, followed by two Ford, Ranger and Figo, while the Chevrolet Pick up, the Utility feel in 6th.

The Isuzu KB surged in 7th from 10th followed by the Toyota Fortuner, in 8th from 14th and Toyota Quantum in 9th from 7th.

Last model in top 10 was the Nissan NP200, dropped there from the 6th place.

Good steps posted by Chevrolet Sonic in 13th from 19th, Volkswagen Jetta in 15th from 23rd, Nissan Juke in 20th from 30th and new Chevrolet Trailblazer entered in the rank in 22nd place.
