Spanish Autos Market recovery stepped back in March. Following 14th month of consecutive growth, sales finally declined 4.7%. However, first quarter 2024 ended with 244.873 sales (+3.0%).
Market Trend and Outlook
Spanish Auto Market in March with 94,840 new registrations, a 4.7% decrease from the prior year. Unfortunately, the strong momentum gained over the last 14 months has come to an end. YTD sales up to 244,873 (+3.0%).
Looking at cumulative data up to March 2024 brand-wise, Toyota maintains leadership with 23,043 sales (+11.1%), followed by Seat at 16,022 (-11.2%), Kia -up 1 spot- at 15,949 (-5.0%) and Peugeot -down 1 spot- with 15,691 units sold (-11.5%).
In 5th Volkswagen with 14,506 sales (-3.9%) followed by Hyundai with 14,252 sales (+2.3%), in front of Renault at 12,843 (-0.7%) and Dacia at 11,890 (+2.4%).
In 9th Citroen at 11,268 sales (-0.2%) and closing the top 10 we have BMW -up 5 spots- into 9th with 10,842 sales (+52.3%)
Looking at the best-selling models, reported in a dedicated article, we can anticipate that the Dacia Sandero is on top of the rankings with an 8.6% increase in YTD sales, followed by the Toyota Corolla up 37.2% and 8 spots.
Medium-Term Market Trend
Following 3 years of losses in 2013 the Spanish autos market started recovering, a growth that would last 6 years and would move sales from 744k to a peak of 1.34 million reached in 2018.
In 2019 sales staggered around the 1.3 million mark, but with the arrival of the pandemic in 2020 they fell 34.6% to 852k registrations. This would put the Spanish market in a difficult situation in the following two years.
After the pandemic car passengers sales remained practically flat in 2021 with 859k sales reported (+0.9%). 2022 performed even worse, losing 4.5% in y/y sales, before to score a robust recovery in 2023, when sales picked up 16.7%.
