Venezuelan Vehicles Sales in 2016 crushed by the strong economic contraction and the tumbling oil price. Ford led the list, where only 10 brands have sold vehicles this year. Annual sales dropped 76%

Market Outlook

The collapse in oil prices below 30 dollars a barrel and output have laid bare structural weaknesses in the economy, which have been exacerbated by unsound economic policies. FocusEconomics panelists see the economy shrinking 4.1% in 2017, which is down 0.4 percentage points from last month’s forecast. For 2018, the contraction is expected to soften to 0.7%.

Dragged down by the deep economic recession, the automotive sector was in deadlock in 2016, losing 76.3% at 4.088 units. Hitting the fourth consecutive annual decline with the worst performance ever, the martket lost almost 315.000 sales from the record established in 2007.

According to data released by the CAVENEZ, the local association of car manufacturers, the vehicles passengers sold in December had been 175 (-88.0%), hitting the 18th y.o.y. drop down in a row.

Competitive Arena

Ford was the leader with 2.170 units (-9.4%) ahead of Toyota, which was in free fall with only 386 (-89.0%). Scania was the best performer, reaching the third step of the podium with 129 sale.

The most remarkable decline was reported by the previous market leader Chevrolet (-99.4%) folloed by Dodge, Mitsubishi, Iveco and Mack.

The best selling model was the Ford Explorer with 771 units (+3.8%) followed by the Ford Ecosport with 464 (-8.7%) and the Ford F250 with 311 (+104.6%).
